City Commemorates Building Safety Week with Educational Open House

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In commemoration of Building Safety Week, May 5-11, the East Lansing Department of Code Enforcement and Neighborhood Conservation and East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) will hold an educational open house for community members on Thursday, May 8 from noon-5 p.m. at 535 M.A.C. Ave.

The open house will provide community members with important home safety information.
Housing inspectors will be present to discuss annual inspections for licensed rental houses and the most common safety items that should be in all residences, whether an apartment or house.

Joe Goodsir of Community Resource Management has donated the use of a rental house for the afternoon, allowing housing inspectors to show the public what they look for while conducting housing inspections. Displays showcasing what to do and what not to do in a home will be set up throughout the open house venue. Items displayed will include: examples of electrical outlets, ground fault interrupters (GFIs), proper use of electrical cords, surge protectors, smoke alarms and proper locks. Presentations will also be played on computer screens, displaying examples of code violations and good examples of code corrections.

The ELFD Fire Prevention Bureau will be present to answer questions about smoke and fire alarm systems, proper egress, fire escape routes, where to locate smoke detectors in your home and other important fire safety questions.

In addition, information about when you need a permit, why would you need a permit and the purpose of inspections will be available. For more information please contact Annette Irwin at (517) 319-6801. See East Lansing’s proclamation for Building Safety Week below, adopted by the East Lansing City Council on May 1, 2008.

Proclamation
Building Safety Week 2008
May 5–11

Whereas, through our continuing attention to building more safely for everyday life and in times of disaster, we enjoy the comfort and peace of mind of structures that are safe and sound; and

Whereas, building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders
and others in the construction industry work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings; and,

Whereas, the dedicated members of the International Code Council develop and implement the highest-quality codes to protect Americans in the buildings where we live, learn, work and play; and,

Whereas, the International Codes, the most widely adopted building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation, used by most U.S. cities, counties and states; these modern building safety codes also include safeguards to protect the public from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorms, tornadoes, wildland fires and earthquakes; and,

Whereas, Building Safety Week, sponsored by the International Code Council, is an excellent opportunity to educate the public. It is a perfect time to increase public awareness of the role of building safety and fire prevention officials, local and state building departments, and federal agencies play in protecting lives and property; and

Whereas, the theme, “Building Safety: Where You Live, Work and Play,” encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the importance of building safety; green and sustainable building; pool, spa and hot tub safety; and new technologies in the construction industry; it presents appropriate steps everyone can take to ensure that the places where we live, learn, work and play are safe, and that countless lives have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies; and,

Whereas, this year, as we observe Building Safety Week, we ask everyone to consider projects to improve building safety at home and in the community, and to acknowledge the essential service provided to all of us by local and state building departments and federal agencies in protecting lives and property;

Now, therefore, it is hereby proclaimed that May 5 through May 11, 2008, is Building Safety Week in the City of East Lansing.. Accordingly, our citizens are encouraged to join communities across America to participate in Building Safety Week activities.

Dated this 1st day of May, 2008.
